What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?
Answer Engine Optimization is about being the answer AI engines like Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity quote directly - not just ranking for a click underneath.

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your content so that AI-powered answer engines - Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and voice assistants - can read it, trust it, and quote it directly when someone asks a question. Where classic SEO fights for a click on a blue link, AEO fights to be the answer that gets read aloud or summarised, often before any link is clicked at all.
Why AEO exists now
For two decades a search was a list of ten links and your job was to rank in that list. That contract is breaking. Google now shows an AI-generated summary above the results for a large and growing share of informational queries, and millions of people start questions inside ChatGPT or Perplexity instead of a search box. In all of these, the user frequently gets a complete, synthesised answer without visiting a single website. If your page is not the source that answer is built from, you are invisible - even if you still "rank" underneath.
That shift is what AEO responds to. It does not replace SEO; it sits on top of it. You still need a fast, crawlable, well-linked site. But you now also need content shaped the way machines extract and cite it. The good news for small Indian businesses is that AEO rewards clarity and genuine expertise more than big budgets, which levels the field against larger competitors who publish bloated, hard-to-parse pages.
How AEO differs from traditional SEO
The two overlap heavily, but the emphasis moves in a few concrete ways. Traditional SEO optimises a page to rank; AEO optimises a passage to be lifted out and quoted. SEO targets keywords; AEO targets questions and entities - the specific people, places, products and concepts a topic is made of. SEO success is a position on a results page; AEO success is being named or paraphrased inside an AI answer, which is harder to see but increasingly where attention goes.
- Unit of value: a ranking URL (SEO) versus a quotable, self-contained answer (AEO).
- Query style: short keywords versus full natural-language questions, often conversational.
- Trust signals: links and authority still matter, but AEO leans hard on clear authorship, consistent facts across the web, and machine-readable structure.
- Measurement: clicks and positions versus citations, mentions and assisted conversions that are harder to attribute.
How to optimise for answer engines
The techniques are not mysterious, and most are things a conscientious publisher should do anyway. Start by answering the question in the first two sentences of every page, then expand. Answer engines preferentially lift the tight summary near the top, so burying your answer under 400 words of preamble works against you. Write the one-line answer a human would give, then justify it below.
Next, structure for extraction. Use descriptive H2 and H3 headings phrased as the questions people actually ask. Break steps into numbered or bulleted lists. Put comparisons in tables. Keep paragraphs short and each focused on a single idea, because a focused paragraph is easy to quote without surrounding context.
Add structured data so machines understand what a page is. FAQ, HowTo, Article, Product and Organization schema give answer engines labelled facts instead of guesses. Schema will not force a citation, but it removes ambiguity about who you are and what you claim. This is routine in good SEO-friendly development, where the markup is built into the templates rather than bolted on afterwards.
Be explicit about entities and authorship. State plainly who wrote the piece and why they are qualified, keep your business name, address and details identical across your site, Google Business Profile and directories, and link concepts to clear definitions. A short glossary of the terms your industry uses is genuinely useful here: it gives engines a clean, canonical definition to draw on and signals topical depth.
Finally, feed the emerging conventions. Some sites now publish an llms.txt file - a plain-text map pointing AI crawlers at their most important pages. It is a proposed convention rather than an official standard, and no engine is obliged to honour it, but it costs almost nothing to add and does no harm. Treat it as a small bet, not a magic switch.
AEO, SEO and GEO - how they fit together
You will hear three acronyms used almost interchangeably, and it helps to keep them straight. SEO is the broad discipline of earning visibility in search. AEO is the slice focused on being the direct answer an engine returns. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is closely related and often used as a synonym for AEO, with a slight emphasis on generative tools like ChatGPT and Gemini specifically. In practice you do not run three separate programmes - you run one content effort, built on solid SEO foundations, that happens to serve humans, traditional rankings and answer engines at the same time. The techniques reinforce each other, which is exactly why we bundle them rather than selling them as rival products.
What AEO is not
AEO is not keyword stuffing for robots, and it is not a trick that lets thin content punch above its weight. Answer engines are trained to prefer sources that are accurate, consistent and corroborated elsewhere. If your page states something no other credible source backs up, you are less likely to be cited, not more. The durable strategy is the boring one: be genuinely correct, be clearly structured, and be consistent everywhere your business appears online.
It is also not a reason to abandon your website. Some founders hear "nobody clicks the links any more" and conclude the site does not matter. The opposite is true - the site is the training material. The answer engine can only quote what you have published well. A fast, well-structured site is the prerequisite for being cited, not a casualty of AI search.
Measuring AEO honestly
This is the uncomfortable part: AEO is hard to measure cleanly today. There is no single dashboard that reports "you were cited in 1,240 AI answers this month." What you can do is watch the proxies. Track branded search volume and direct traffic, because people who hear your name in an answer often come looking for you by name later. Watch Search Console for queries where impressions stay high but clicks fall - a classic fingerprint of your content being summarised above the results. And periodically ask the major answer engines your target questions yourself to see whether you are named. It is manual, but it is honest, and it beats inventing numbers.
What this costs in India
AEO is mostly re-pointed effort rather than a separate line item, so in rupee terms it is accessible. If you already produce content, the extra work - answer-first rewriting, schema, entity cleanup, internal linking - is often a modest add-on. As a rough guide in Delhi NCR, a one-time AEO audit and restructure of an existing small-business site typically runs ₹25,000-75,000 depending on page count, while bundling AEO into an ongoing content and SEO, AEO and GEO retainer commonly sits in the ₹20,000-60,000 per month band. Those are realistic ranges for solid work, not the cheapest quote you will find, and you should be wary of anyone promising guaranteed AI citations - no one can honestly promise that. If you are weighing where a website and its content budget should go more broadly, our breakdown of what a website costs in India puts these numbers in context, and our pricing page lays out how we scope the work.
The short version: AEO is SEO growing up for a world where the answer, not the link, is the product. Write clearly, prove your expertise, mark up your facts, and stay consistent - and you give every answer engine a reason to make your business the answer.
