What is a wireframe?
Quick answer
A wireframe is a simple, low-detail layout of a page or screen that shows where content and features go, like a blueprint. It focuses on structure and hierarchy using boxes, lines, and placeholder text, deliberately leaving out colour and final visuals so everyone agrees on the layout first.
Wireframes come early in the design process, before visual design. By stripping away styling, they keep the conversation on what goes where, what is most important, and how a user moves through the screen, which is far cheaper to change at this stage than later.
They can be rough sketches or tidy digital frames in tools like Figma. Once the structure is approved, designers add visual design and interaction detail, turning the wireframe into a high-fidelity mockup or prototype.
