Shopify vs WordPress — which is better for your website?
Quick answer
Choose Shopify if you mainly want to sell products with minimal upkeep — it manages hosting, payments and security for a monthly fee. Choose WordPress (usually with WooCommerce) if you want full control, content-heavy flexibility and no per-sale lock-in, and you can manage hosting, plugins and updates. For most India D2C stores Shopify launches faster; for content-led sites or tight budgets WordPress often wins.

Estimate your store costThe honest split is maintenance versus control. Shopify is a hosted platform: you pay a monthly subscription (plus transaction fees unless you use Shopify Payments), and in return it keeps the store secure, fast and updated with almost no technical upkeep. WordPress is self-hosted software you fully control, but you or your developer own the hosting, security, backups, plugin updates and performance tuning.
For selling, Shopify's checkout is excellent out of the box and converts well on mobile, which matters in India where most orders land on a phone. WooCommerce on WordPress can match it but needs more setup and good hosting to stay fast. For blogs, content and unusual custom layouts, WordPress is more flexible; Shopify is deliberately more constrained.
Our usual advice: if your business is selling products and you want to launch fast and focus on marketing, start on Shopify. If you are content-first, need unusual functionality, or want to avoid monthly platform fees long term, WordPress or a custom Next.js build fits better. Frequently asked questions
Is Shopify or WordPress cheaper?
WordPress usually has a lower upfront cost (a site can start around ₹25,000) but adds ongoing hosting, plugin and maintenance costs. Shopify has a higher effective monthly cost (subscription plus any transaction fees) but bundles hosting, security and updates, so total cost of ownership can end up similar once upkeep is counted.
Can I move from WordPress to Shopify later, or the reverse?
Yes. Migrating a WooCommerce/WordPress store to Shopify is common — we move products, customers, orders and content and set up redirects so you keep your SEO. The reverse is also possible. It is a planned project rather than a one-click switch, which is why we scope and quote it up front.
Which is better for SEO?
Both can rank well. WordPress gives finer control over content, URLs and technical SEO, which suits content-heavy strategies. Shopify's SEO is solid for product and collection pages. For either, speed, structure and genuinely useful content matter far more than the platform itself.
What do you recommend for a new D2C brand in India?
For most new D2C brands that want to launch quickly and focus on marketing, we recommend Shopify — the checkout, payments (UPI, cards, COD) and reliability are strong out of the box. If you are content-first or want to avoid monthly fees long term, WooCommerce or a custom build can be the better call. We give an honest recommendation for your specific case.
