Web Development
What is a database in web development?
Quick answer
A database is an organised store where a website or app keeps its data: users, products, orders, posts, and more, so it can be saved, searched, and updated reliably. When you log in or place an order, the app is reading from and writing to a database behind the scenes.
Databases come in two broad families. Relational (SQL) databases like PostgreSQL and MySQL store data in structured tables and suit cases where relationships and accuracy matter, such as orders linked to customers. Non-relational (NoSQL) databases like MongoDB or DynamoDB store more flexible, document-style data and scale easily for large or fast-changing workloads.
The backend talks to the database on nearly every meaningful action, so its design affects speed, reliability, and cost. Sensible structure, indexes for fast lookups, and regular backups keep the data safe and the app responsive as it grows.
