Web Development
What is page speed and what's a good score?
Quick answer
Page speed is how quickly a web page loads and becomes usable. It's commonly measured with tools like Google PageSpeed Insights, which score pages from 0 to 100: 90+ is good, 50 to 89 needs work, and below 50 is poor. Faster pages convert better and rank better.
The score reflects both lab tests and real-world metrics, including the Core Web Vitals. What slows pages down most is usually large unoptimised images, too much JavaScript, slow hosting, and render-blocking resources. Fixing those by compressing images, serving from a CDN, and trimming scripts typically moves the number fastest.
Speed matters because users abandon slow pages and Google uses page experience as a ranking factor. The practical goal isn't a perfect 100 but a genuinely fast experience for real visitors, especially on mobile and slower connections, which remain common across much of India.
