What is responsive design?
Quick answer
Responsive design is an approach to building websites so the layout automatically adapts to any screen size, whether phone, tablet, or desktop, using flexible grids, scalable images, and CSS rules that respond to the device width. One site works and looks good everywhere, instead of needing a separate mobile version.
Rather than fixed pixel widths, responsive layouts use relative units and 'breakpoints' that rearrange content as the viewport changes. Text stays readable, images scale, and navigation adjusts for touch, all from a single codebase.
It is now the baseline expectation: most traffic is mobile, and Google indexes the mobile version of a site first. A responsive build improves usability, reduces maintenance, and supports SEO because there is one URL and one set of content to rank.
