What is static site generation (SSG)?
Quick answer
Static site generation builds every page into ready-made HTML files at build time, before anyone visits. Those files are then served directly from a CDN, so pages load extremely fast and are cheap and secure to host. The content updates when you rebuild the site, not on each request.
Because the pages are pre-built, there is no database query or server rendering when a visitor arrives, just a file delivered from the edge. Tools like Next.js, Astro, and Hugo generate these pages from your content and components.
SSG suits content that does not change every second: marketing sites, documentation, blogs, and landing pages. For data that must be live, it is often combined with client-side fetching or on-demand rebuilds, so you keep the speed without the staleness.
