Web Development
What is server-side rendering (SSR)?
Quick answer
Server-side rendering is when a web page's HTML is generated on the server for each request and sent to the browser ready to display, rather than being built in the browser with JavaScript. This gives faster first paint and content that search engines and AI crawlers can read immediately.
With SSR, the server assembles the page so users see meaningful content sooner and the browser has less work to do on load. Frameworks like Next.js and Nuxt make this practical by rendering on the server and then 'hydrating' the page so it becomes interactive.
SSR is a strong choice when SEO, social sharing, and fast first loads matter, such as marketing sites, blogs, and e-commerce. The cost is a running server and more complexity than a purely static site.
