Web Development
What is a single-page application (SPA)?
Quick answer
A single-page application is a website that loads a single HTML page once, then updates content dynamically with JavaScript as you navigate, instead of requesting a fresh page from the server each time. This makes interactions feel fast and app-like, the way Gmail or Trello do.
SPAs are built with frameworks like React, Vue, or Angular. After the first load, only data moves between the browser and server, so screens change without a full reload. That makes them ideal for dashboards, internal tools, and highly interactive products.
The trade-off is SEO and first-load speed: because content is rendered in the browser, search engines and AI crawlers can struggle to read it unless you add server-side rendering or pre-rendering. For content-heavy sites that need to rank, a hybrid approach usually works better.
