The Founder
Ananya Krishnan spent six years behind espresso bars before she realised the coffee reaching most cups in India was mediocre — not because of bad baristas, but because the supply chain was broken. Beans were old, origins were mystery blends, and roasters were optimising for shelf-life, not flavour.
In 2016, with a secondhand 5kg drum, a rented garage in Coorg, and three direct-trade relationships, she began Ember. The name is intentional — not the blaze, but the quiet, sustained heat that makes something extraordinary possible.
Today, Ember operates from a 3,000 sq ft roastery in Bengaluru’s Indiranagar with a 25kg Loring Smart Roast drum, a cupping lab open to the public every Saturday, and 14 origin relationships across 8 countries.
The Roasting Process
Specialty coffee roasting is equal parts science and intuition — we obsess over both.
We buy green coffee directly from cooperatives and estates, cutting out middlemen. We visit farms in-person for quality verification and long-term relationship building.
Every new lot is first roasted on a 200g sample roaster. We cup three roast profiles and select the curve that best expresses the origin's character.
Our 25kg Loring Smart Roast drum is programmed with precision roast curves — controlling charge temp, first crack timing, and development time to the second.
Every batch is cupped before approval. We score on the SCA protocol and any batch below our threshold is rejected — even if the loss hurts.
Ember Through the Years
2016
Founder Ananya Krishnan, a former barista champion, converts a garage in Coorg into Ember's first roasting room — a single 5kg drum, one origin.
2018
Direct relationships forged with three cooperatives in Ethiopia and Karnataka. Sourcing becomes intentional, traceable, and fully documented.
2020
Ember ships its first subscription boxes across India — 80 subscribers in month one. The freshness philosophy scales nationwide.
2022
A dedicated roasting facility opens in Bengaluru with a 25kg Loring Smart Roast. Capacity triples; quality control gets obsessive.
2024
Ember champions Indian specialty coffee — Chikmagalur and Araku lots win international cupping scores above 86. Pride and proof.
2026
Over 4,200 monthly subscribers, 18 wholesale café partners, and a cupping lab open to the public every Saturday morning.
