What is a canonical tag?
Quick answer
A canonical tag is a small piece of HTML (rel="canonical") that tells search engines which URL is the main version of a page when similar or duplicate versions exist. It consolidates ranking signals onto one URL, so duplicate content doesn't split your SEO value across several addresses.
Sites often serve the same content under several URLs, with and without "www", with tracking parameters attached, or as print and mobile variants. Left unmanaged, search engines may treat these as separate, competing pages. A canonical tag points them all to the preferred URL so credit isn't diluted.
It is a strong hint rather than a strict command, so the canonical page should genuinely match the content. Setting canonicals correctly is a routine but important part of technical SEO, especially on e-commerce and large sites where duplicate URLs are common.
