What is a conversion funnel?
Quick answer
A conversion funnel is the journey a visitor takes toward a goal, from first discovering you, through considering their options, to converting by buying, signing up, or enquiring. It's called a funnel because people drop off at each stage, so fewer reach the end than entered. Mapping it shows where you're losing customers.
A typical funnel runs from awareness, when someone finds you through search, ads, or social, to interest and consideration as they browse and compare, to action when they buy or enquire, and ideally to retention. By tracking how many move from one stage to the next, you can see exactly where the biggest drop-offs happen.
The value is focus. If most visitors reach the cart but abandon at checkout, that's where to fix friction, not at the top of the funnel. Combined with analytics and conversion rate optimisation, funnel analysis turns "we need more traffic" into specific, measurable improvements.
