What is keyword research?
Quick answer
Keyword research is the process of finding the actual words and phrases people type into search engines when looking for what you offer. It reveals what your customers search for, roughly how often, and how hard each term is to rank for — so you can focus your content on terms that bring the right visitors.
The work combines tools and judgement. Free sources like Google Keyword Planner, Google Search Console, and the 'People also ask' and autocomplete suggestions show real queries; paid tools such as SEMrush and Ahrefs add estimates for search volume and ranking difficulty. For each term you weigh three things: how many people search it, how competitive it is, and the intent behind it — whether someone is just researching or ready to buy.
In practice, chasing a few huge, highly competitive 'head' terms is often a losing game for a smaller business. More specific 'long-tail' phrases (for example, 'ecommerce website developer in Gurugram') have less volume but clearer intent and are far easier to win. Good keyword research then shapes what you write — which pages, blog posts, and landing pages to create — and is especially powerful when you add local terms for a location-based business.
