What are Open Graph tags?
Quick answer
Open Graph tags are snippets of HTML that control how a page looks when it's shared on social platforms like Facebook, LinkedIn, and WhatsApp. They set the title, description, and preview image, so a shared link appears as a rich, clickable card instead of a bare URL.
Introduced by Facebook, the Open Graph protocol uses tags such as og:title, og:description, and og:image. Most social networks read them and many messaging apps do too. Setting an attractive, correctly sized preview image, around 1200 by 630 pixels, is what makes shared links stand out in feeds and chats.
Twitter/X adds its own "Twitter Card" tags that work in a similar way. These tags don't affect search rankings directly, but good link previews noticeably improve click-through on social media and messaging, which is why they are a standard part of a well-built site.
